New Copyright Office Report on Unclaimed Royalties

On July 8, The U.S. Copyright Office released a report titled Unclaimed Royalties: Best Practice Recommendations for The Mechanical Licensing Collective. The report compiles the Office’s recommendations on how The MLC can reduce the amount of unclaimed royalties that result from The MLC’s distribution process.

The recommendations made by the Office were based on the public comments submitted by interested parties, as well as the comments made by participants in two roundtables sponsored by the Office. Individuals from The MLC’s staff, Board and Advisory Committees participated in both sets of roundtables, and The MLC has already implemented some changes based on the feedback and suggestions we received from other participants during those roundtables.

The MLC would like to acknowledge the incredible work done by the staff at the U.S. Copyright Office in preparing this report. We would also like thank everyone who participated in the roundtable discussions or submitted public comments. Thank you all for Playing Your Part! The report gives The MLC yet another impressive resource to use as we continue our work to build our operations and fulfill our mission for our Members. If you are interested in reading the report, you can access it online here
