Interim Annual Report

The MLC’s 2021 Interim Annual Report was compiled at the request of the U.S. Copyright Office. The MLC will release its full Annual Report later this summer, and each year thereafter we will publish a new Annual Report for the preceding year around the same time.

This first, Interim Annual Report highlights:

  • The end-to-end process we have implemented to manage the collection of data and royalties from DSPs operating under the blanket license and the distribution of those royalties to our Members;
  • The outreach work we have done and community partnerships we have established, to educate and empower our Members;
  • The technology and tools we developed and launched in 2021 for our Members;
  • The numerous ways we support our Members around the world; and
  • The diverse and talented team of professionals we have assembled to do this work.

In addition to 2021 performance metrics featured in the Interim Annual Report, we also recently shared with our Members the following additional data for our first nine royalty distributions (April to December 2021):

  • Total of the royalty pools reported to The MLC: $494.8 million
  • Total royalties collected: $411.7 million
  • Total royalties distributed: $292.9 million
  • Total unmatched royalties: $72.5 million
  • Total unclaimed royalties: $44.4 million
  • Total matched royalties on hold: $1.9 million
  • Initial match rates: increased from 80 percent in April to more than 83 percent in each of the last four months of 2021

We will provide metrics for all of the usage data we received from DSPs during 2021 in the full year annual report that we expect to release later this summer.
